Portmarnock Golf Club can exclude women from being members

The argument being that Portmarnock is a 'boys-only club', and has to be accepted the same as gay clubs,

rugby clubs, or women-only book clubs.

The General Manager - John Quigley was pleased with the court's decision

APPEAL RESULT

Equality Authority v. Portmarnock Golf Club & Ors 2005 IEHC 235 10 June 2005

The court upheld a 2005 High Court finding that the club is not a "discriminating" club.

Women can play and enter the clubhouse but cannot have full membership.

Portmarnock is a registered club and can continue to sell alcohol without changing its membership policy.

By a majority of three to two the Equality Authority's appeal against a decision that Portmarnock

Golf Club can exclude women from being members was dismissed.

One of the judges that voted against the Equality Authority appeal is a woman.

The Equality Authority is funded by the tax payer.

Portmarnock and Roayl Dublin are the only two golf clubs in Ireland to uphold this policy.
